Letter frequency in English

This generator gives every letter the same chance, so “Z” comes up as often as “E”. In real English text that's far from true: E, T, A, O and I are the most common letters, while J, X, Q and Z are the rarest. For word games, mix in extra vowels or use the Vowels option for one tile in three.

Frequently asked questions

Is every letter equally likely?
Yes. Each letter in the selected range has the same chance on every pick.
Which letters count as vowels?
A, E, I, O and U. Y is treated as a consonant here, although it can act as a vowel in words like “gym”.
Can I get a list of letters without repeats?
Yes. Turn on “No repeats” and choose how many letters you need. With all 26 selected, you'll get a shuffled alphabet.
