The fae courts
Scottish folklore split fairies into two groups: the Seelie Court, thought of as mostly benevolent, and the Unseelie Court, known for malice and mischief. Modern fantasy often reimagines them as the Summer and Winter Courts. Wild or solitary fae belong to neither court and are tied to one place, such as a stream, a hollow tree or a hill.
| Court | Mood | Surnames sound like |
|---|---|---|
| Summer Court | Warm, bright and generous, but fickle | Honeydew, Sunbloom, Clovergleam |
| Winter Court | Cold, secretive and dangerous | Frostveil, Thornwhisper, Moonglass |
| Wild fae | Earthy, playful and unpredictable | Mossbrook, Brambleroot, Hazelknot |
True names and use-names
Folklore often holds that knowing a fae's true name gives you power over them, so fae rarely give it freely. In many stories they go by a use-name or a title instead.
Try giving one character both. Generate a true name with Name only, then a public name with Title, like “Liriel of the Hollow Hill”. The gap between the two is a ready-made plot hook.
