How the dragon names are built
Each name is assembled from an opening syllable that sets the tone, an optional middle syllable, and an ending that shifts how the name feels. The generator then rejects anything with awkward letter clusters, so every name is easy to read aloud and none look broken.
| Style | Sound | Typical openings |
|---|---|---|
| Fierce | Hard consonants, short and aggressive | Krag-, Thrax-, Vor-, Draz- |
| Ancient | Long vowels, grand and old | Aeth-, Ith-, Quor-, Umb- |
| Elegant | Soft consonants that flow | Lyr-, Sy-, Vaen-, Thal- |
| Serpentine | Hissing sibilants for sea serpents and wyrms | Ssy-, Nag-, Zeth-, Vass- |
| Primal | Guttural, beast-like growls | Grok-, Hrum-, Gharn-, Tusk- |
Endings follow gender: masculine names tend to end in -rax, -thor or -gorn, feminine names in -thys, -wyn or -lyx, and gender-neutral names in -ith, -yx or -oth. The element never changes the name itself, only the title.
Titles come in many shapes, the way legends name their monsters: a description (the Burning, the Frostwing), a deed (Devourer of Kings, Who Swallowed the Moon), a lair (Who Sleeps Beneath the Mountain), a lineage (Last of the Ember Brood) or a mark (the Three-Headed, the Twice-Slain). Sometimes a dragon earns two, like the Burning, Scourge of Cities.
Choosing the right name for your dragon
Match the role
A dragon that terrorizes a kingdom suits a fierce name. A wise, centuries-old mentor sounds better with an ancient one.
Use a title for legends
In folklore, dragons are often known by what they did. The title is how villagers talk about your dragon; the name is what it calls itself.
Say it three times
If a name is hard to say, readers and players will shorten it anyway. Pick one that still sounds good when it's shortened.
Name the world around it
Give the dragon's rider, lair and kingdom matching names with the Fantasy Name Generator and Island Name Generator.
